INTER-UNIVERSITY COUNCIL FOR EAST AFRICA URGED TO FACILITATE THE DEVELOPMENT AND SHARING OF DIGITAL LEARNING RESOURCES AMONGST UNIVERSITIES IN THE REGION

His Excellency, President Paul Kagame of the Republic of Rwanda, urged the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) to proactively set the Council towards coordinating the diffusion of knowledge in the productive sectors in the region, and for the adoption and commercialization of technologies and innovative ideas generated through research that universities are conducting. In his speech delivered by Rt Hon. Dr. Pierre Damien Habumuremyi, Prime Minister of the Republic of Rwanda at the opening of the Third Annual Meeting of the Inter-University Council for East Africa held in Kigali, on 30th March 2012, the President stressed the importance of universities in discharging the core functions of teaching, research and outreach services delivery, to forge close partnerships with governments, industry and the business community, as these were the consumers of products from universities, which are the graduates and research outputs. The President expressed his satisfaction with the theme of the meeting: “the Role of Universities in Fostering Knowledge-driven Economies in East Africa through University/Industry Partnerships”. He said, “Therefore, I am delighted to note that the creation of university/industry partnership will be the subject for extensive discussion during your meeting. Rwanda and other EAC Partner States look forward to receive a tangible action plan from your deliberations, for appropriate action by the Community”. Read more
